About Pope House Bourbon Lounge
2075 NW Glisan • Built 1890
A house with a history.
1890 · The beginning
The Pope House is designated a Historic Landmark by the Portland Historic Landmarks Commission. Located in Portland’s historic Nob Hill district, the house is typical of the architecture of the late 1800s. It was built by George Pope and his wife Isabella in 1890.
George Pope · Mariner & merchant
Originally from Aberdeen, Scotland, George was a mariner and shipbuilder who lived in San Francisco and Portland and spent several years in command of vessels in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He founded George Pope & Co., a local import and shipping business, and built the first wool packing house in the state.
1984 → 2009 · A new chapter
The house was primarily used as a rental property throughout the 1900s until being struck by an arsonist in 1984. Its life as a bar began in the 1990s as a coffee shop turned martini bar known as the Brazen Bean. In 2009, Joel Carson and Kitling Lum opened The Pope House Bourbon Lounge, emphasizing their love of Kentucky bourbon, craft cocktails, and Southern hospitality.
